A Map of the Middle East: Exploring the Region's Extreme Temperatures

The Middle East is a region known for its scorching heat during the summer months. With temperatures often reaching unbearable levels, it's no surprise that several countries in this region have recorded some of the highest temperatures on earth. In fact, according to the latest data available, at least 23 countries have recorded maximum temperatures of 50C (122F) or above.

The hottest known temperature in Africa is 55C (131F), recorded in Kebili, Tunisia in 1931. However, the current highest officially registered temperature remains 56.7C (134F), which was recorded in California's Death Valley back in 1913. But what about the Middle East itself? What are the hottest temperatures ever recorded in each country?

The map below provides a detailed overview of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in every country around the world. As expected, several countries in the Middle East have recorded extremely high temperatures. The Gulf region is particularly notorious for its hot and humid climate, with temperatures often exceeding 40C (104F) during the summer months.

In June this year, several countries in the region recorded temperatures higher than 50C (112F). Iraq recorded a maximum temperature of 51.6C (124.8F) on July 1, while Oman and Saudi Arabia also saw temperatures soar above 50C. Meanwhile, Kuwait was not far behind, with the city of Nuwaiseeb recording the highest temperature in the world so far this year at an incredible 53.2C (127.7F).

But what about other parts of the region? In Iran, the town of Omidiyeh recorded a maximum temperature of 51C (123.8F), while in the United Arab Emirates, temperatures reached as high as 50C (122F) in some areas.

The Middle East is not the only region to experience extreme heat, however. In Oregon, USA, the city of Portland recently hit an all-time high of 46.6C (116F), breaking its previous record set in 1965.
